Rural rate relief
Certain types of businesses situated in rural settlements with a population of less than 3,000 residents may qualify for 100% rate relief.
The relief only applies if the business is:
- The only general store, post office or food shop in the settlement with a rateable value of less than £8,500
- The only pub or petrol filling station in the settlement with a rateable value of up to £12,500
- The property is occupied
The council can also give discretionary relief of up to 100% for a property in a rural area with a rateable value of £16,500 or less, if we are satisfied that:
- The property is in a rural settlement
- The rateable value of the property is £16,500 or less
- The property is used for purposes which are of benefit to the local community
It is reasonable for the Council to grant relief taking into account the interests of its council taxpayers
Details linked to Rural Discretionary Relief as well as the Rural Settlement List can be found in our Discretionary Rate Relief Policy.
