How to subscribe

How does the subscription service work?

Subscriptions will open in September. More information will be added here shortly.

If you pay the annual subscription fee before 1 October 2024 we'll continue to collect your garden bin or sacks every two weeks on your scheduled collection day, although you won't be able to put food waste in the bin or sack.

By paying an annual subscription fee, we'll collect your garden bin or sack every two weeks from the date you're registered. Details of your collection day will be provided then.

Your garden waste will be taken away and turned into compost for use in agriculture and horticulture.

A leaflet about the new service will be delivered to all households.

How much does it cost?

Subscriptions cost £56 per year, and you'll need to subsribe and pay the full £56 for each garden bin that you'd like us to collect, up to a maximum of three.

The annual subscription fee is £56 and covers the period 1 October 2024 to 30 September 2025 (12 months). A payment window is September 2024 until 31 March 2025. The charge is £56 regardless of when you sign up. Once you've signed up and paid, we'll empty your garden bin on your scheduled collection day.

By signing up by 30 September 2024, your collections will continue as usual on your scheduled collection day, and you'll benefit from the full year of collections and get the best value for money out of the service.

Are there any discounts or exemptions?

No, although the length of the payment window does give up to eight months for those residents to save and budget.

How many bins or sacks could I have?

You could have up to three bins but would pay a separate subscription fee for each bin, ie a maximum of £168.

Each roll of sacks has 104 sacks. Based on four sacks being the equivalent to the capacity of a 240-litre bin, this equates to 26 collections, and additional rolls can be purchased on request.

Can I pay a subscription on someone else's behalf?

You can buy a subscription for someone else’s address within the Shropshire Council area, such as a friend, family member, or neighbour.

To do this you will need to sign them up with their own account in MiPermit using their email address or mobile/landline number, and selecting their home address from the search box. This will ensure that the stickers are sent to their home, even if you then choose to pay for their subscription and provide different billing details.

If you use their phone number, they won’t receive an email receipt/confirmation, but you – or they - will be able to sign into MiPermit using their number and view their subscription.

Could I share a bin with a neighbour?

If you’re eligible for a subscription and think one garden bin could meet the needs of you and your neighbour – or a group of neighbours – then you'd be able to share a bin. The subscription fee would apply per bin, so, if you wished to share, one of you would need to be the named subscriber and pay the fee.

If you currently use a large 1100 litre communal bin to dispose of your garden waste (for example, you live in a flat or HMO), your collections will stop on 1 October. The opportunity to subscribe will be communicated later.

If you currently use a 240 litre garden bin your housing provider or letting agent may need to arrange the garden waste subscription and the management of this unless you can come to an agreement with your neighbours to share the cost, but one resident will need to be the named subscriber.

Which properties aren’t eligible?

For operational reasons, not all properties are suitable for us to collect from. If you’re not sure whether you’re eligible, you’ll be able to check during the subscription process.

If your property is shown as ineligible for garden waste collections this is often because of one of the following reasons:

  • You're in a flat that isn't currently registered as having a garden bin or being able to fit one in at the property without causing a hazard to others
  • You're in a narrow street where typically residents don’t have gardens
  • Your property may have a planning or legal restriction on being able to present a wheeled garden bin

If you think we've got this wrong, contact us explaining why you think your property should be eligible for a garden waste collection.

What happens after I subscribe?

Once you subscribe, we'll send you a letter and a special sticker for you to attach to your garden bin so that it can be easily seen by our collection crews. Place the sticker on the back of your bin (handle side) as soon as you get it – instructions about how to do this will be on your letter.

The stickers are designed to fray and tear when removed from the bins. This prevents them being reused by other residents. Your sticker will have your address and unique reference number on it, which allows the waste teams to check that the bin is at the relevant location.

We'll post a new collection sticker to subscribers each year when they resubscribe.

If you subscribe to a sack collection you'll receive a roll of 104 coloured sacks, and you should put out a maximum of four sacks on your scheduled collection dates.

Can I request a replacement sticker?

If you've subscribed but haven't received your welcome pack within ten working days, you can request a replacement sticker online.

What if I can’t subscribe/pay online?

Please call MiPermit on 0345 520 7007, select option 2 and tell the adviser that you wish to subscribe to Shropshire Council’s garden waste collection service.
