Why are we doing this?

What are the benefits for Shropshire Council?

The booking system will save us money by reducing the cost of disposing of trade waste, non-recyclable waste and waste from outside Shropshire.

What are the benefits for residents?

  • Help to reduce congestion and queuing times
  • Increase recycling, as centre staff will be able to better engage with visitors
  • Reduce the amount of trade waste taken to the centres
  • Bookable online and by phone
  • Open to Shropshire residents
  • The centres will remain free of charge to use

In this video, Councillor Ian Nellins, Shropshire Council’s deputy leader and cabinet member with responsibility for waste management, explains how the system will work...

Do other councils use booking systems?

Many other councils already use booking systems at their recycling centres, or are planning to introduce one. Our contractor Veolia already successfully runs booking systems at a number of recycling centres.

Will the booking system lead to a rise in fly-tipping?

Other councils that already have booking systems haven't found any evidence that the booking process has increased fly-tipping levels.

In January 2023, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) carried out a study to find out if there were any links between recycling centre booking systems and incidents of fly-tipping. Surveys and interviews carried out with local authorities didn't show a link between booking systems and fly-tipping.

How do I dispose of trade or commercial waste?

You can't dispose of trade/commercial waste at a household recycling centre. For advice on how to dispose of such waste please visit the Gov.UK website.

Will you be reviewing the booking system?

We’ll be assessing the information that we gather from this booking system and its use across all of our HRC sites at the end of March 2025, with the aim of ensuring that the system continues to evolve to best meet the needs of our customers.
