Specialist schools and resourced provision
We're an inclusive local authority, so for the majority of children with special educational needs and/or disabilities, including those with an education, health and care plan (EHCP), their local mainstream school will be able to meet their needs.
For children and young people who require a more specialist environment some of our mainstream schools are also able to offer a 'resourced provision' (sometimes called a hub).
Resourced provisions cater for pupils with EHCPs who require a more specialist environment within a mainstream school to support their access to the curriculum and activities offered by the school. Some of our resourced provisions are dedicated classrooms within our mainstream school, and in others they're separate buildings on the main school site.
Key aspects
- Targeted support: having an increased focus on specific needs such as autism, speech and language or social, emotional and mental health (SEMH)
- Specialist environment: a designated base within the school offers a quieter, structured setting for focused learning, intervention, or sensory breaks
- Mainstream inclusion: the goal is to enable students to integrate into mainstream classes for part of the day, with appropriate staff and support from the resource base assisting as needed
- Funding and staffing: we provide additional funding to these provisions to allow for a higher staff-to-pupil ratio with specialised staff
- Access: all children must have an EHCP. We consider all admissions in accordance with the SEN and Disability Code of Practice, and in consultation with the setting, before a decision on a placement is made

Specialist schools
For a small number of children and young people with complex education, health and care needs a placement in a specialist setting may be identified as appropriate.
A child or young person must have an EHCP to attend a specialist setting. We consider all admissions in accordance with the SEN and Disability Code of Practice, and in consultation with the setting, before a decision on a placement is made. Admissions are managed in partnership through consultation between the EHCP Team, the setting and Shropshire School Admissions. Please contact the EHCP Team for more information.
