Ryan's story
I’m Ryan, and I work in a bakery which is part of a large supermarket. I have a moderate learning disability and autism which meant I needed extra time at school to complete my work and help from a teaching assistant in lessons.
When I was in year 13, I decided I didn’t want to stay at school or college full-time any longer, I was ready to do something else. I got help from the independent information, advice and guidance officer at school, and with help from my parents and teachers I decided I would like to do a supported internship. I've always loved cooking so I was supported to find a position in a bakery. I've been here for two years now. I've finished my internship and I have a paid part-time job.
When I was 17 I met with a transition worker from the Shropshire Adult Social Care Preparing for Adulthood Team. They came to visit me at school and at home to get to know me and my family. We talked a lot about what I would like to do in the future, what I can do for myself, what support I might need and who could help me. From being 18, I've had a PA (personal assistant) who I meet with at the weekends. We've been working together to help me learn more about taking care of myself. We go out together and also spend time at home learning about money, washing my clothes, shopping and cooking and making my money last.
When I'm a bit older, I'd like to move into my own home with my friends. I have one friend I'd like to live with and my Preparing for Adulthood worker is going to introduce me to other young people who might also like to share a house when I'm ready to move out of my parents’ house.
