Cosford Footway Project

The Cosford Footway Project is a key active travel improvement being delivered by Shropshire Council, with over £350,000 of funding secured from Active Travel England (ATE). The scheme provides a new, safe pedestrian route between Cosford Railway Station, RAF Cosford and the RAF Museum Midlands, addressing a long-standing missing link where visitors and local residents have previously been required to walk along a busy road without a dedicated footway. In addition to the new footway, the project includes improved street lighting and a permanent reduction in the speed limit, creating a safer and more accessible environment for people travelling on foot.

The project has been delivered through a collaborative partnership involving Shropshire Council, the RAF Museum Midlands, RAF Cosford, West Midlands Rail Executive, West Midlands Railway, WSP and Kier Infrastructure. Construction commenced in June 2026, although unforeseen issues relating to a previously unidentified water pipe have resulted in a three-month delay. This required elements of the scheme to be redesigned and construction to be paused over the summer holiday period to minimise impacts on museum and RAF operations.

The scheme is now due to be completed ahead of the autumn half-term holiday, improving access to one of Shropshire's most important visitor destinations, which attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.

The project reflects a shared ambition to enable more people to travel sustainably, improve connections between rail services and local destinations, reduce reliance on private car journeys, and demonstrate Shropshire's commitment to delivering high-quality active travel infrastructure.
