School Streets

What is a 'School Street'?

School Streets aim to help children access their school safely by promoting active travel and reducing air pollution by temporarily closing the area surrounding the school to vehicles during peak drop off and pick up times.

Only vehicles that have been granted an exemption are allowed to enter a School Street zone during these times. However, vehicles can exit a zone at any time without a permit.

Zones can be monitored and enforced by various means such as signage, temporary barriers or automated number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras depending on the street layout.

Active Travel England has funded Shropshire's School Streets.

Let us know if you would like your school to be considered to become a School Street. You can initially contact us at sustainabletravelplanning@shropshire.gov.uk and we'll meet you to look at your school's suitability, in conjunction with any funding opportunities we currently have.
