Church Stretton
Church Stretton is home to around 5,000 people. The town lies on the A49 about halfway between Shrewsbury and Ludlow.
The A49 presents a significant barrier to those travelling between the town centre on the west side and the large residential areas to the east. The steep gradients at the edges of the town also create a challenge, particularly to cycling, when travelling out.
The population density is highest to the north of the town. In addition, there is a site to the north shared by a pre-school, primary school, secondary school and leisure centre, generating a large number of journeys to a single area at peak times.
Compared to other towns in Shropshire, the percentage of Church Stretton’s residents commuting less than 5km to work is lower. Data shows that many travel to larger towns such as Shrewsbury and Ludlow. Therefore, connections into the wider transport networks are vital.
