Success stories Scout Hut, Much Wenlock

The scout hut in Much Wenlock has been given a new lease of life since it was taken on by a group of local volunteers. They have a proven record of helping young people develop and improve key life skills.

The former youth centre transferred from Shropshire Council in 2019 under the Community Asset Transfer (CAT) programme, and it enabled the scouts, beavers and cubs to move from a building in poor condition to a facility they could enhance and improve, thus enabling their association to grow and expand thanks to the dedicated team of volunteers who run it.

The Scout Association, a registered charity, worked with our Assets and Estates team to agree the transfer of the building on a long-term lease. This enabled the organisation to attract grant funding and improve the fabric of the building.

Since being transferred, the centre has gone from strength to strength and is an inspiring story of a building that is being run very successfully by a dedicated group of volunteers – they should be really proud.

The Much Wenlock group scout leader said:

“We're extremely grateful to Shropshire Council, the site offers us a wonderful opportunity and is now an asset to the community. Our amazing volunteers have transformed it from a place which was closed to the public to now being a thriving part of Much Wenlock life.“
