Regenerating Shropshire
Shropshire’s Economic Growth Team both guide and facilitate regeneration in the county through a collaborative approach. Documents such as the Shrewsbury Design Code, created through partnership working and extensive public consultation, ensure that regeneration activities are appropriate and sensitive to the communities they are taking place in. There's a strong emphasis on place making, with plans and designs that are unique, considering both the historical context and future needs of communities. Shropshire has diverse high streets and housing, and regeneration projects aim to enhance this diversity and avoid ‘clone towns’. Once partners are aligned to a shared vision for regeneration, we work to secure funding for projects and provide expertise for delivery.
We work across Shropshire on large and small projects (over the short, medium and long term). Current projects include the transformational Smithfield Riverside Development Programme in Shrewsbury (the county’s ‘once in a generation’ scheme), regenerating the former White Horse public house building in Wem, and the Cambrian Station Building in Oswestry.
Successfully completed regeneration projects include Flaxmill Maltings in Shrewsbury, and working in partnership with Historic England and the High Street Heritage Action Zone (HSHAZ) in Oswestry. The HSHAZ has proven so successful that it's hoped that the model will be rolled out to other towns in the county, and the Flaxmill Maltings has provided a focus to drive regeneration along Shrewsbury’s Northern Corridor.
