The Open Register
The open register (also known as the Edited Register) is an extract of the electoral register and is not used for elections.
About the register
The open register can be bought by any person, company or organisation. For example, it is used by businesses and charities to confirm name and address details.
Your name and address will be included in the open register unless you ask for them to be removed. Removing your details from the open register does not affect your right to vote.
Opt out
Your name and address will be included in the open register unless you opt out by asking for them to be removed.
Removing your details from the open register would not affect your right to vote.
If you wish to buy or opt out of the open register, email elections@shropshire.gov.uk
We do not set the charges that are made for purchasing the register. The cost is set out in the 'Representation of the People' Acts and is the same across the United Kingdom.
Credit problems and the Electoral Register
The electoral register is often used for credit referencing purposes to confirm identity and counteract fraud. You may be denied credit if your details cannot be confirmed on the register.
Credit reference agencies
The full register of electors can legally be sold on to registered credit reference agencies (CRAs) who use it to update information held on individuals' credit reference files. The full register is not the same as the open register, which can be bought by any person, company or organisation.
Your inclusion in/exclusion from the open register has no bearing on a CRA's ability to see if you are registered at your address.
The register is updated on a monthly basis. Any newly added electors or changes to an existing elector's details made in a particular month's register are then sent to the CRAs.
