FAQs

What is the LNRS?

The Local Nature Recovery Strategy is part of a national programme to help restore and connect nature across England. Every local authority must produce one.

For Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin, the LNRS includes:

What does the map show?

It shows opportunities - not obligations. The LNRS map is designed to highlight where habitat creation or enhancement could be possible based on various datasets (eg soils, topography, water flow, existing wildlife corridors).

It’s not a list of what must happen - it’s a conversation starter. We want your feedback on what’s practical, what isn’t, and what’s already happening.

The map doesn't necessarily show what habitat is currently there. It's an opportunity map and shows what we're suggesting would be a good action for nature in this location.

What should I do?

  1. Visit the map: See what's been mapped on land you know or manage.
  2. Add comments: If something’s wrong, missing, or unrealistic, click the location and add your feedback. You'll be asked if you’re the landowner or not - anyone can comment. Please note that it's mapping what habitat could be there, not necessarily the habitat that's there right now.
  3. Share what you’re already doing: If you’ve planted hedgerows, restored grassland, or managed ponds - let us know so your efforts are recognised.
  4. Feed back before the deadline: 15 October 2025

Can I see my local parish?

Yes - parish boundaries are available as a layer on the map. To view them:

  • Click the layers icon (top right of the map panel)
  • Tick Parish Boundaries
  • Zoom in to your area

How do I give feedback?

Option 1: click on the map

  • Select a mapped opportunity area
  • Add your comment in the feedback box
  • Click submit. Your comment will be sent to the council — but won’t be visible to others. All feedback is confidential

Option 2: email us directly

If you'd like your land removed from the opportunity areas, or you want to explain something in more detail, email Lynn Parker: lnrs@shropshire.gov.uk

Why do my comments disappear after I click submit?

Don’t worry - they’ve gone through. Comments are deliberately not shown on the public map to protect privacy. All feedback is stored securely and used to update the final strategy.

Can I comment if I’m not the landowner?

Yes. The map allows anyone to contribute - but if you can identify who the landowner is, that’s helpful. We may want to follow up with them (confidentially) to check the information.

Can I remove my land from the map?

Yes. How to do this depends on the scale of the removal required:

  • Small errors or details – use the map feedback tool
  • Larger issues or full removal – email us directly at: lnrs@shropshire.gov.uk. We'll then send you a form to complete. Land can only be removed by the landowner or someone with a long-term management agreement (at least five years)

What if I want to challenge or remove something from the map?

It depends on the scale:

  • Small errors or details – use the map feedback tool
  • Larger issues or full removal – email us directly at: lnrs@shropshire.gov.uk

Is this just for Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin?

No - this is part of a national requirement under the Environment Act. Every county in England must produce an LNRS. Together, they'll form a nature recovery network across the country.

Will this influence funding?

Likely, yes. The LNRS is expected to guide:

  • Biodiversity net gain (BNG) uplift opportunities (eg a 15% bonus for priority areas)
  • Influence future government funding for nature
  • Other local or national green funding pots

It’s not the only tool used — but it's likely to become increasingly important.

Where can I speak to someone?

We’re running in-person drop-in sessions and an online Q&A event. Come along if you’d like help using the map, understanding how your land is shown, or talking through the strategy.

Or email us: lnrs@shropshire.gov.uk
