Other education-based careers in Shropshire

Besides becoming a teacher there are many other career opportunities available in the education sector, where you'll inspire young people to achieve their brightest possible future.

School support staff are fundamental to how a school operates, and each person plays an important role in ensuring students are learning in a safe and supportive environment. From teaching assistants to careers advisors to caretakers to library staff, there are a multitude of career options to explore within a school setting.

The following job roles offer a taste of what some of the roles are like. You can also browse our jobs page to see what positions are currently available in Shropshire.

Teaching assistant /learning support assistant (TA/LSA)

Being a teaching assistant involves working under the instruction of teaching staff, to assist in the management of pupils and the classroom, including the maintenance of resources and equipment. There's clear career progression, where you could start as a level 1 TA and progress up to a level 4/5 higher level TA, where you'd be involved in planning and delivering learning activities and supervising whole classes for a short period of time. Some of our teaching assistants have progressed onto becoming teachers via the apprenticeship route, so there are many different options available within this role.

Administration staff

Whether it's within a primary or secondary school, administration staff are key to ensuring that a school runs smoothly. Whether you're a very organised person with great attention to detail or have a passion for finance, working in a school office could be for you. The career pathway provides an opportunity to progress from a level 1 clerical assistant to a level 4 office manager, where the roles become available. School administrators may be eligible to apply for an apprenticeship to progress further in their careers.

Facilities roles, including site managers, caretakers, cleaners and catering staff

Facilities staff play a crucial role in the maintenance and security of the school buildings and grounds, which all contribute to how a school is run and how pupils learn. If you're someone who would be good at creating and maintaining a healthy and safe environment for children to flourish in, a facilities role could be for you.

The above are just some examples of the careers on offer as a member of support staff in a Shropshire school. Other roles include:

  • School business manager
