CPI Safety Intervention Foundation Training - 3rd Edition™

This course is recommended for staff working in health and social care who need to prevent and/or intervene in crisis situations.

The course consists of two stages:

  • An e-learning programme taking approximately 2.5 hours - this is self-led learning, completed at a time and place to suit the learner, followed by
  • A four hour instructor-led event to include disengagement skills practise.

Your place will be confirmed approximately four weeks before the event date and at that point you will also receive an email from the CPI which will include your link to the e-learning programme.  Please note that the e-learning programme must be completed prior to attending the instructor-led session.

Programme Objectives: Participants will learn how to:

  • Interpret distress behaviours and address the cause of the behaviour to de-escalate the situation.
  • Assess risk of behaviour using the Decision-Making Matrix and identify preventive strategies to mitigate risk.
  • Identify and respond appropriately to various levels of crisis behaviours.
  • Manage their emotional responses to distress behaviour.
  • Use communication skills to be supportive and strengthen interventions to de-escalate potential conflict situations.
  • Use directive strategies when verbally intervening to de-escalate defensive behaviours.
  • Use the Decision-Making Matrix in the moment of Risk Behaviour to determine safety interventions that represent a reasonable, proportionate, least restrictive, and last-resort course of action.
  • Use safety intervention strategies to maximise safety and minimise harm in situations where behaviour presents an imminent or immediate risk of harm to self or others.
  • Apply a process for support and learning at the end of a crisis situation.
  • Explain how you will consider the Physical Skills Review Framework and key legal and professional considerations when using non-restrictive disengagements and restrictive interventions.
