Local aggregates assessment
Due to our geology, Shropshire contains a variety of different mineral resources, with aggregates (sand and gravel and crushed rock) the most actively ‘worked’.
National policy and guidance requires that we maintain an adequate and steady supply of aggregates. One way we do so is through production of a Local Aggregate Assessment (LAA), which forecasts future demand for aggregates, analyses existing aggregate supply, and then determines the ‘balance’ between demand and supply. The LAA also provides evidence which can inform decisions on aggregate provision in the next Local Plans for Shropshire.
The latest LAA for Shropshire is available on this webpage. It has taken account of feedback from a review by the West Midlands Aggregates Working Party. Notably, it reflects the West Midlands Aggregates Working Party (WMAWP) agreed position to use a ten-year rolling average as the principal indicator for future aggregate demand, which is consistent with national policy and guidance.
