- Location: Bronygarth Bridge, Ceiriog Valley, near Oswestry
- Start date: 18 August 2025
- Duration: 17 weeks (under full road closure)
Description
Following Storm Bert in 2024, which damaged Bronygarth Bridge, a scheme was designed to repair the structure.
The works are due to take place under a full road closure, for a period of 17 weeks, to stabilise the structure and reopen the carriageway to the public.
Works are programmed to undertake repairs to the masonry parapet, reinstatement of the downstream end of the culvert through the structure and repairs to the masonry wingwall. In addition, new concrete wing walls will be constructed to prevent future deterioration to the embankments.
Works commenced on 18 August 2025.
The existing road closure and diversion route will be maintained for the duration of the scheme, with a pedestrian access route in place.
The work is being undertaken by Shropshire Council’s maintenance contractor Kier, and overseen by WSP on behalf of Shropshire Council.
Normal working hours are between 7:30am and 4:30pm Monday to Friday.
We apologise for any inconvenience this has caused. If you have any queries, please don't hesitate to contact Shropshire Council Highways Customer Services Centre on 0345 678 9006.
Update - 17 September 2025
Work onsite is currently delayed while negotiations are ongoing with the Woodland Trust to ensure the method of repair protects an ancient woodland and to ensure the council complies with environmental and legislative requirements. It's hoped that these negotiations will be concluded soon and the repair work to the structure continued shortly.
We thank you for your patience and consideration.

Update - 25 September 2025
Repair work to the structure is currently scheduled to commence on 29 September 2025.
We appreciate your patience and understanding during this time.
Update - 23 October 2025
Work to repair Bronygarth Bridge is still progressing.
The bridge closed due to damage following Storm Bert. Repair works to the structure began on Wednesday 1 October 2025.
Works include repairs to the masonry parapet, reinstatement of the downstream end of the culvert through the structure and repairs to the masonry wingwall. In addition, new concrete wing walls will be constructed to prevent future deterioration to the embankments.
The structure’s embankments have now been cleared of vegetation and access steps have been constructed to allow access to the base of the structure.

To alleviate loading on the structure, the carriageway above has been excavated. A concrete blinding layer has also been implemented to provide protection against future weather conditions as we head into the winter months.
Following vegetation clearance and further inspection, the extent of scour damage is greater than initially anticipated. As a result, minor alterations to the design solution are required.
Formwork designs are currently being signed off through the temporary works approval process, in preparation for the concrete pour to the base of the structure.
Subject to weather conditions, works are expected to be completed by late February 2026.
