The work, involving the installation of new drainage along the B5479 Shrewsbury Road to provide the required storm water outfall, will require a section of Shrewsbury Road from Mile End Roundabout to the Maes-Y-Clawdd junction to be fully closed. This is to enable the work to be completed safely, protecting both the workforce and members of the public.

In addition to the above, and to facilitate the continued construction of a new four-arm roundabout by Pickstock Homes, which will form the new access into the housing development, the road closure will be extended to incorporate Maes-Y-Clawdd at Oswestry’s Maesbury Road Industrial Estate northern junction. Working collaboratively and combining the traffic management for both schemes will ultimately reduce future disruption to the highway network.

A summary of the traffic management phases is as follows:

  • Stage 1 – Present day to 13 July – three-way traffic lights on Shrewsbury Road and Maes-Y-Clawdd
  • Stage 2 – 14 July to 31 August – full road closure on Shrewsbury Road and Maes-Y-Clawdd
  • Stage 3 – 1 September to 12 September – road closure on Maes-Y-Clawdd only and two-way traffic lights on Shrewsbury Road
  • Stage 4 – 13 September to 29 October – three-way traffic lights on Shrewsbury Road and Maes-Y-Clawdd

Traffic management will be in place for the closed section of road with a signed diversion route, suitable for all vehicles, heading north on the A5 and coming back through Oswestry. Access will be maintained to all businesses on the industrial estate, via the A483 Welshpool Road and via Maesbury Road.

Shropshire Council and Pickstock Homes will be working collaboratively to ensure that access is maintained to local businesses during these periods. A one-way in and one-way out system will be created from Morrisons’ Roundabout to maintain access to all businesses for deliveries and customers off the B4579 to the west of the Pickstock Homes works.

Diverting traffic flow during the road closures is expected to reduce queue times at the current temporary three-way traffic signals arrangement at this junction.

Through working with Shropshire Council and combining road closures, Pickstock Homes expects to complete their roundabout works by October 2025, significantly sooner than the original date of January 2026.

Shropshire Council and Pickstock Homes will be working collaboratively with McPhillips and Traffix to minimise inconvenience to the highway network during this period.
