Local area SEND inspection

An Area SEND inspection was undertaken by Ofsted & CQC in Shropshire in January 2020. The inspection considered the arrangements of the Area Partnership for children and young people with special educational needs and/or disabilities and those who attend alternative provision.

Inspection outcome

The inspection report found several positives, such as

  • Good educational outcomes for children and young people with an EHCP in mainstream schools and colleges
  • Strong support for younger children, and helpful services like portage, sensory inclusion, speech and language teams, and community nurses
  • It also noted that agencies work well together during key transitions and offer opportunities for independence and life skills

However, the inspection raised some concerns. Because of these, Ofsted / CQC asked the local area to create a written statement of action with six key areas to improve.

Areas for improvement

A written statement of action (WSoA) was produced following the report to address the six priority areas where improvement was needed.

This has been monitored by the Department for Education regularly since the inspection. Progress has been recorded through feedback to the SEND partnership.

The most recent monitoring letter was received in October 2025.
