Further education

Many young people will remain in some form of education or training to the age of 18 years, some may even start work when they finish school.

The vast majority of young people with SEND are capable of sustainable paid employment with the right preparation and support. Continuing in further education will help young people build on their prior achievements and support their progression towards greater independence and aspirations for paid employment/higher education.

One of the most effective ways to prepare young people with SEND for employment is to arrange work-based learning, such as study programmes, supported internships, apprenticeships and traineeships, which enable them to have first-hand experience of work. This section will tell you more about these options and about colleges and post-16 providers.
