Further education (FE) study programmes
All young people entering further education (FE) from year 12 should move to a study programme with a clear focus on high-quality work experience that prepares them for employment, independent living, being healthy and participating within their community.
Each study programme must include English or Maths study where previous attainment is below a GCSE grade C.
Each young person will be known as a student and they will progress to higher levels of study, building on previous learning, but not repeating learning already successfully achieved.
Students may choose a particular study programme pathway, with a core aim that focuses on a vocational, academic, or work-based route and is centred around their career aspirations.
Study programmes are designed with a clear focus on preparing students for work. This includes identifying the skills that employers value and helping young people to develop them.
Principles of the study programme
- Progression to a higher level of study than prior attainment and does not repeat learning already successfully achieved
- Study that stretches
- Must include English and maths (if less than C grade)
- Meaningful work experience which develops employability skills or higher levels of education, including Supported Internships (as applicable)
- Other activities that build skills, attitudes, and confidence for progression to adulthood outcomes
Young people including those with an education, health and care plan would usually need to enrol directly with a mainstream FE provider, and they can be supported with the application process by their school.
