Bio security
Good “bio security” is essential to prevent the spread of animal diseases.
As well as on farm, livestock markets and shows are considered high risk areas for disease and have to have an animal gathering license issued by Defra. There are conditions attached to this license that includes good bio security and cleansing and disinfection.
Good bio security reduces the risk of animal diseases like foot and mouth. If you go to a livestock market you should ensure that your clothes are free from contamination and should use the bio security provided by the market. You should wear suitable clothing and footwear like wellington boots that can be easily cleansed and disinfected. Wash your hands after handling any livestock.
If you have transported livestock to a market, show, abattoir or farm then thoroughly disinfect and wash out the trailer or vehicle afterwards.
