Livestock welfare
Defra publications have created a welfare code of practice for keepers of livestock. The code is designed to help keepers of livestock in regard to appropriate animal husbandry. By following the recommendations it promotes animal health and well being.
The codes of practice are based around the five freedoms:
- Freedom from hunger and thirst (fresh water and diet)
- Freedom from discomfort (appropriate environment, shelter, resting area)
- Freedom from pain, injury or disease (prevention and rapid diagnosis and treatment and disease control)
- Freedom to express normal patterns of behaviour (space, facilities, company of other animals)
- Freedom from fear and distress (prevention of mental distress)
