On this page you will find the details of upcoming inquests in Shropshire. There may be occasions when it is in everyone's interest – and the bereaved in particular - to hold the inquest quickly. This site should therefore be checked regularly in case an inquest has been listed at short notice. If you have a specific interest in the listing of a case please let us know and we will endeavour to keep you informed of any changes.

Pre-Inquest reviews

Pre-inquest reviews are public, but there's likely to be a restriction on what can be reported to prevent any prejudice to the subsequent inquest. In appropriate cases the pre-inquest review may proceed to the inquest itself.

Inquest attendance - Guildhall, Frankwell Quay, Shrewsbury

The Court Room for inquests is at the Guildhall, Frankwell Quay, Shrewsbury SY3 8HQ and is on the first floor which is accessed by 2 flights of stairs, should you or another attendee require alternative access prior notice is required to the Coroner’s Office. If you or another attendee requires wheelchair access do please let us know as soon as soon possible as alternative venue may be arranged. 

If anyone does wish to attend an inquest in person, including the media, you/they must contact us on 01743 258540 or by email coroner@shropshire.gov.uk no later than 12 noon the preceding day before the hearing so that we can send you the venue information for attendance. 

Attendance remotely or by telephone may be requested via the Coroner's Office. Individuals seeking remote attendance will specifically need to explain why it is in the interests of justice to allow them to observe a hearing remotely when there is the option to attend in person. 

There is no dress code but we ask that people dress reasonably smartly being mindful of the formality of proceedings and in respect to the family. Children are not permitted in court.

The taking of photographs, including screenshots, video recordings or broadcasting images from a hearing in a coroner’s court is prohibited whether in person or remotely. 

Inquests are public hearings so the court cannot exclude the press but you do not have to interact with any media representatives, if you would prefer not to. We cannot prevent accounts of the Inquest being published or broadcast.

Inquests in writing 

Inquests can now be concluded under Section 9C of the Coroners and Justice Act 2009 i.e. an Inquest conducted in writing with no hearing required.
