Young carers
Welcome to Shropshire Young Carers
Many children and young people take on practical or emotional responsibilities at home when a family member has a disability, long‑term illness, mental health condition, or challenges related to drug or alcohol use. These children are known as young carers. Often, families see these responsibilities as part of everyday life, which means a young carer’s role can go unrecognised.
Shropshire Young Carers supports children and young people aged 5–17 who live within a Shropshire Council postcode area and who help to look after someone at home. Our aim is to ensure that young carers are identified early, understood, and offered meaningful support.
We provide group activities, and trusted adults who understand the challenges that caring roles can bring. This helps young carers to build confidence, develop friendships, take a break, and maintain their wellbeing alongside their caring responsibilities.
Every caring situation is unique. Whether you’re a parent seeking support for your child or a professional making a referral, we’re here to make sure young carers are valued, recognised, and given the space to thrive.
