What support is there for young carers in Shropshire?
In Shropshire, we want every young carer to feel understood, valued, and supported. Caring for a loved one is an important role, but it can also be tiring or isolating at times. That’s why our service is here, to offer a safe space, opportunities for fun, and trusted adults who understand what young carers are going through.
Our focus is always on respite and support, giving young people a chance to take a breath, build friendships, and feel like children and young people first.
Monthly young carer groups across Shropshire
The Shropshire Young Carers service runs monthly evening groups across the county, in:
- Shrewsbury
- Ludlow
- Bridgnorth
- Market Drayton
- Oswestry
These groups are warm, relaxed spaces where young carers can:
- Have fun and take part in crafts, games, and activities
- Meet others who understand what life is like at home
- Build friendships with children and young people in similar situations
- Talk to our friendly staff if they want to share how they’re feeling
- Enjoy time that’s just for them — away from caring responsibilities
The focus is simple: time out, enjoyment, and emotional support.
Holiday activities and extra opportunities
During school holidays, we do our best to offer additional trips, workshops, and activities, so that young carers can:
- Try new things
- Relax and recharge
- Make positive memories
- Spend time with others who relate to their experiences
These sessions can make a huge difference, especially during longer school breaks.
Support through schools
We're currently strengthening our links with schools across Shropshire, so that young carers can be supported throughout their day-to-day life. As part of this work, we aim to:
- Help schools to identify and understand young carers
- Provide guidance to teachers and pastoral teams
- Ensure that young carers know who they can talk to in school
- Create consistency between home, school, and our groups
This joined up approach means that young carers are less likely to slip through the net, and more likely to feel seen and understood.
A team that understands
Our staff are friendly, approachable, and experienced in supporting young carers. We understand the unique pressures they face, and we aim to be people they can talk to openly without judgement and in complete confidence. Whether a young person needs someone to listen, help them navigate school stress, or simply offer reassurance, we’re here.
