Shropshire has a rich and varied wealth of historic landscapes, buildings, settlements, and archaeological sites, dating from prehistoric times to the Industrial Revolution. These range from the spectacular and well-known sites, such as the county’s hillforts, the Roman town of Wroxeter, the many castles of the Marches and the industrial heritage of the Ironbridge Gorge, to those for which little above-ground trace survives. Shropshire’s unique archaeological and built heritage is an important cultural resource, and one which we want to protect and enhance for the enjoyment of present and future generations.
Our Historic Environment team is responsible for providing advice and guidance on the management and conservation of Shropshire’s archaeology, historic buildings and conservation areas. We help the council to manage its own historic assets, provide advice on development plans, planning applications, and rural land management.
The team manages the Historic Environment Record and enhances and protects the historic environment through targeted projects, including the Shropshire Historic Landscape Characterisation (HLC) project and the Shropshire Historic Farmstead Characterisation project.
