Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin Local Nature Recovery Strategy

Overview

Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin’s nature is really special. Few counties in England can boast being home to rare and important species like pine marten, curlew, pearl mussel, nobel chafer and twaite shad. But the natural environment is under pressure, threatening the ecosystems that we need to survive and thrive – including everything from food production to clean air, carbon capture to flood management.

Local nature recovery strategies are an important part of the UK government’s commitment to tackling the biodiversity crisis.

Under the Environment Act 2021, local authorities must develop a local nature recovery strategy (LNRS) for their appointed area. Shropshire Council is the authority responsible for developing the LNRS for Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin, supported by Telford & Wrekin Council and Natural England.

The draft LNRS for Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin is the result of a huge collaborative effort, involving town and parish councils, local community groups and residents, farmers and landowners, environmental organisations and wildlife recorders, technical experts, national agencies and many more people and partners. Thanks to everyone who has contributed so far. Our 'How the LNRS has been developed' page outlines the process undertaken to get to this point, and future plans.

The draft strategy and map

The LNRS identifies where action for nature can provide the greatest benefit for biodiversity and the wider environment. It has two main parts: a local habitat map, which points to suggested actions in these locations, and a written strategy that sets out in full the county’s local priorities for habitat and species recovery.

The map and draft document are now open to public consultation, and we invite anyone interested or invested in nature recovery to let us know their views on the strategy by midnight on Wednesday 15 October 2025. You can learn more about the LNRS process and how you can take action for nature using the information linked to from this page.
