Aims to: Introduce participants to the key messages of the Mental Capacity Act (MCA) and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DOLS) relating to young people

Learning objectives:

  • Consider the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and its implications for practice within Children’s Services
  • Consider the 5 statutory principles of the Mental Capacity Act 2005
  • Consider IMCA (Independent Mental Capacity Advocates) & LPA (lasting power of attorney)
  • Where DoLS (Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards) came from and what is a deprivation
  • Consider what are restrictions
  • The ‘Acid Test’ and making a DoLS referral
  • Take away messages

Audience: Individuals working with or supporting young people (in particular 16-18 yr olds) requiring an awareness level knowledge of the MCA and DOLS
