Libraries Gutun Owain: medieval poet, historian, genealogist and more, and his patrons in the Oswestry region

Gutun Owain (c.1440 - c.1503) was a Welsh gentleman-poet from Dudleston, near Oswestry, who cultivated a range of interests including history, genealogy, heraldry, astrology, science and medicine as well as poetry.

Dr Jenny Day’s talk will provide an overview of Gutun’s career and connections with other poets and scholars such as Dafydd ab Edmwnd of Hanmer, the Trefor family of Pentre Kendric (Weston Rhyn), Siôn Edward of Chirk and Phylip ap Madog of Haughton. She will then highlight the interesting and varied contents of one of his earliest manuscripts (NLW Llanstephan 28), written for Phylip, a veteran of the Hundred Years War who was himself an amateur poet. She will also give a reading of Gutun’s praise poem for Phylip, highlighting what it reveals about the careers of both men and the mentoring relationship between them.

Free to attend. No booking required, just come along.
