Description
Shropshire Council have secured S106 contributions for works to improve the walking routes in various locations, primarily for school routes from multiple new developments around the town, to the local schools. Between 2006 and 2026 approximately 1600 new houses have been/are to be built in Shifnal, located on various developments around the town, which has increased footfall in the area. There is a desire to promote further active travel around the town, and to promote this Shropshire Council intends to improve the walking route network. Locations include:
- Church Street - Proposed pedestrian build-out to improve intervisibility for vehicles and pedestrians and help to reduce traffic speeds in the vicinity of St Andrew’s church
- Lawton Road East - Upgrading the pedestrian link between Spring Hill and Lamledge Lane with connections into the housing development at Weaver Grove, to also include appropriate lighting.
- Lawton Road West - Upgrading the pedestrian link to the rear of the properties on Aston Road, to include appropriate lighting. This scheme also seeks to explore the introduction of parking restrictions on Aston Road outside terrace properties to help vehicle flow into town centre and pedestrian safety to address the issues of vehicles which are currently mounting the footway
Both Lawton Road phases are subject to extensive land ownership investigations, which are underway.
