Coronation Avenue, Ludlow (B4361)

Repair, and improvement works to Corve Culvert

Duration

Works are programmed to undertake repair, and improvement works to Corve Culvert, which sits below Coronation Avenue (B4361).

These works are to remedy the damage noted during the routine structural inspection programme and to improve the longevity of the structure.

The works are due to take place under a full road closure, for a period of five weeks, from 28/07/2025 to 29/08/2025, with a diversion route in place.

*Update - 2 September 2025*

Following recent concerns regarding the extended programme and its impact on the Ludlow Food Festival, we have reviewed the latest schedule provided by Kier and their supply chain partners. We can now confirm the following update:

The current intention is to fully reopen Coronation Avenue (B4361) by 12 September, or at minimum, have two-way traffic signals operational to support the Ludlow Food Festival.

Progress overview

  • Start date: 28 July 2025
  • Original completion date: 2 September 2025

Delay cause: discovery of a disused cast iron gas duct located lower than expected, which prevented the pouring of the final section of the concrete slab. This duct has now been removed, allowing works to proceed.

Updated programme

  • 29 August: final section of concrete overslab poured and curing
  • 3–4 September: waterproofing preparation and application
  • 5–7 September: backfilling of the structure
  • 8–9 September: carriageway reinstatement (kerbing, edging, base course)
  • 10 September: final surfacing of the carriageway
  • 11 September: completion of works and reopening of Coronation Avenue to traffic

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to complete these essential improvements.

Comment from Councillor Andy Boddington

“This new schedule of works is very welcome. It means that the flow of vehicles and pedestrians will be unimpeded during Ludlow Food Festival. The festival is our town’s signature event. We want people to be able to arrive and leave with ease, so they can have a great day out in our historic town. I’d like to thank council officers and our contractors for bringing the work forward”

The programmed works are as follows.

The carriageway and footway over the structure will be excavated to enable the construction of a concrete over slab, to reinforce the existing structure.

A curing time of seven days is required to the concrete over slab, for the waterproofing layer to adhere to the surface of the concrete. During this period, works will pause above the structure.

Once the waterproofing layer has cured, the carriageway and footway will be reconstructed, and road markings reinstated.

Though works will pause above the carriageway whilst the concrete slab is curing, repairs work to the soffit of the culvert are programmed, during which, the areas of spalled and delaminated concrete will be removed and reinstated with a concrete repair mortar.

We thank you for your patience and consideration.

  • Duration: five weeks
